Dearest members!

The spring 2009 semester is over. We had our last meeting today and were lucky enough to have Crystal Chavez from KUT 90.5 come talk to us. She shared some important tips on how to tailor your resume to today’s job market, how to stand out in the eyes of potential employers, and where to seek internships. KUT is currently seeking interns! Let me know if you’re interested, and I’ll give Crystal your contact information.

I want to thank everyone who has been involved with SPJ this semester, both officers, members and advisers. I want to thank all the girls who helped out with the bake sale and with Bobcat Build. I also especially want to thank Professor Martinez for attending basically every one of our meetings, for always being there to answer questions and give advice and for helping us out with Bobcat Build. And a big thanks to Anthony for being an awesome VP and for setting up this blog and our other social networking sites. I am grateful to everyone but want to especially point out the hard work that these people put into SPJ this year.

This is my last term as president as I am about to graduate and want to focus my last semester on trying to find a job (and maybe one day a career!). Anthony is also moving on, possibly to a different school, and Grant is graduating and joining the higher ranks of the US Navy (congrats, Grant!).

So now it’s time for you guys to step in! If you’re interested in keeping SPJ alive and becoming an officer, let me or Professor Martinez know. For now, these are the available positions:

President
Vice President
Recruitment Coordinator

I also recommend adding a Social Networking position so that our blog, Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter pages are always updated.I definitely still plan on being involved with SPJ and advising our new leaders in any way that I can, so feel free to email or call me with any questions or ideas. Let’s make this next semester a great one!

Last month’s convention was quite rewarding for Texas State. I personally felt a call to action to attend. Although my future endeavors will probably take me into the U.S. Navy for a second time, journalism will and forever be a cornerstone in my talent department. Writing has always come easy to me; now it has grown to encompass video. The conference was well planned and well put together. The Fort Worth Hilton was an upscale venue that did well with the surroundings of SPJ. Many different universities and colleges attended from all over Texas and Oklahoma, and Texas State managed to send five individuals to the conference. I received a second place award for my Hurricane Ike video which can be viewed on Youtube as “Ikenow: One month later.” I was happy to have been recognized for all the hard work I put into Dr. England’s T.V. News class. The conference had many speakers who discussed television news, although I felt as if they were discussing things I had already been taught. This is a tribute to Texas State University and the instructors of this school. I feel as if they have “over-prepared” us for graduation. Most of what was said at the conference was already hashed out in some if not all of my classes. At the luncheon, the guest speaker discussed how print journalism is taking a major hit due to the internet. Larry Carlson’s media management class has addressed this in many ways, but it is a good topic and I saw the worthiness of discussing this matter at the banquet. Kym Fox and Susan Weill were the advisers who attended, and I was glad to be in their company. Our SPJ President Hannah Miller and VP Anthony Martinez also made the trip. While this will be my last semester at Texas State, I want to pass along a feeling of gratitude toward everyone involved with SPJ – from Gilbert Martinez all the way down to Christine and myself. We have weathered the storm of getting SPJ back on its feet at Texas State, and I want to be the first to say, that we kick some a** at doing it!!!!! Hannah, you did a great job at juggling everything. Anthony, you stepped in at the right time and although you are ARMY, you still were a focal point at keeping things afloat. Christine, you and I both know how hard this year was. It almost felt like we were doing too much, but it was a blast working with you and I hope Texas State is more fun for you next year than it was this year. To everyone that helped in getting Texas State to the Convention, I would also like to extend a “Thank You”. All the fundraising we did; paid off!!!! I am going to miss all that SPJ has to offer. Good luck in the future with all your endeavors. ANCHORS AWEIGH!!

Respectfully,

Grant Martin

SPJ members got their hands dirty on Saturday at Bobcat Build, a yearly community service project that is put on by Texas State University. We helped a lady named Patricia clean up her yard. She was incredibly grateful and, typical grandma style, fed us lots of food.

Here’s what we helped her with:

- moved logs
- laid down soil (about 20 or 30 huge bags of it)
- laid down flower seeds
- cleaned windows (using a squeege, soap, hardcore glass cleaner, paper towels AND useless glass cleaner given to us by the school)
- raked
- shoveled dirt
- filled about 10 huge trash bags full of weeds

I am still scratched up from all the yard work, which makes me feel like a pretty awesome volunteer!

Check out our Flickr for pictures of the event.

– This is Hannah, your SPJ president, reporting for duty with my experience at the SPJ region 8 conference. –

So don’t freak out about the title – we don’t know if newspapers are dying yet (let’s hope they are not) – but they are changing, that’s for sure. Some people assume that this change means that newspapers will eventually join the Dodo bird and become extinct, others embrace the change and try to adapt accordingly, and still others remain staunchly mired in denial. I ran into all three types at the conference, but the vast majority of people there were excited about the fact that newspaper reporters and editors can evolve along with their medium and become more technologically savvy, flexible, and creative. You can do a lot with pen and ink, but you can do even more with audio, video, and pictures.

The first session I attended was a pep talk by reporter Hagit Limor who told us again and again that there is still hope and that yes, you will find a job. I found the narrative parts of her speech very interesting and fun to listen to, but it was hard to feel encouraged just because she told me to be. I know I am qualified for a job when I graduate, but what is there to do? Are there any jobs out there?

To my surprise, the SPJ conference, which is pretty heavily focused on print, provided attendees with a video workshop on Saturday. It was taught by Aaron Chimbel from WFAA-TV in Dallas. It was a very basic course in video shooting and editing, but I enjoyed it. I am taking video production right now as part of my Electronic Media sequence, and it’s opening up a job market I never really saw myself working in. I did print in high school and have been focused on radio since I got to Texas State, but lately I’ve really been able to envision myself working in TV. Here are some things I learned at the video training:

- Avoid movement (don’t be panning, zooming, tilting etc. when you shoot because that makes editing difficult)
- Hold every shot for 10 seconds to make sure you get enough of everything
- Cutaway shots: If you’re filming a house beeing bulldozed, and you want to cut to the debris, you need a shot to transition from the bulldozer to the debris. One example could be filming the neighbors watching the house being bulldozed. This gives the video some variety and avoids jump cuts (the same shot repeated over).
- And this I learned today in class:

The Five Shot Method

1. Shoot a close-up of whatever the person’s hands are doing
2. Shoot a close-up of their face
3. Shoot their whole body
4. Shoot them from behind and get an over-the-shoulder peek at what they’re doing
5. Get one more angle that’s different from the others

I also attended a session on blogging/web creation. This session was really helpful to me and actually convinced me to finally start a blog. One of these days I’m going to give in and join Twitter, too. Neil Foote from UNT, Mike Orren of Pegasus News, and PR professional Richie Escovedo were very helpful in explaining the benefits of multimedia journalism. I forget exactly what I asked, but the answer from one of the guys was that there is no such thing as print and broadcast – they are now the same thing. That was refreshing to hear. Journalism now encompasses radio, television, photography, the written word, and web. Here are some of the topics they touched on:

Blogging
If you plan on having a career in journalism, a blog is an excellent way to show off your skills. Use it to show potential employers how well you can write, post your pictures, your stories, your everything. In today’s competitive marketplace, employers definitely make use of blogs to weed out the professionals from the really creative professionals.
Website Builders
If you want to go a step further, make your own website. Plus, having one shows that you know how to make one, and that’s a valuable skill to have. Ning.com or drupal.org are both good places to start.
Images
Need pictures? Need them legally? Check out Creative Commons and Flickr for free, legally accessible photos.

You can download all the information they gave us here.

After that session I headed over to the Region 8 business meeting with Anthony. That’s for a different post, though. Hopefully you guys will consider attending the regional conference next year if you can. I recommend it!

By Anthony Martinez

Speeches from several award winning journalists set the tone for the regional conference in Fort Worth, Texas, this past weekend. Each of them urged the members in attendence, both students and professionals, to continue striving for excellence. None of the speakers or panelists failed to acknolwedge the dark times faced by the global economy, and thus the field of journalism. What they did do, however, was offer the reminder that there have been bad times before and the industry survived them all.

Hagit Limor, of WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, spoke at Saturday’s opening session and delivered the powerful message that strong media are required in times such as these to serve as watchdogs for the public. She cautioned that the largest obsticle the industry faces is the industry itself. With constantly emerging new technologies, media must reinvent themselves and be flexible. Reporters can no longer expect to get by with only a pen and paper. Everyone needs to know how to shoot, and edit, video and photos to help visually tell the story.

Following the opening session members split off and went to a wide variety of panels in which they had interest. I found myself at a session given by Dave Lieber, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, titled The Power of the Story: How to Communicate Any Message to Anyone. In this panel, Lieber gave us a brief background on the way humans have communicated since the dawn of language. Simply put, we tell stories. There is always a hero, there is always a villian or something to overcome, there is a low point, there is a climax and there is an ending. Lieber went on to criticize the inverted pyramid method of presenting information, saying it leads to dull pieces that fail to engage the audience and ultimately costs readers. According to Lieber, when the time to dig beneath the surface is taken, there is always information available that will turn any event into an engaging story.

During the Mark of Excellence Awards Luncheon, Gilbert Bailón, former president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, spoke about the future of news. Bailón was optimistic that news will never be irrelevant, saying that the bloggers, talk shows, and everyone else still depend on reporting for their information. He also cautioned the professionals, and the students, against abandoning what we know or the way we work as we push forward with convergence. One remark in particular drew a hearty round of applause. Bailón asked why media outlets are cutting internships, when interns are the future of the industry, already know the technology, and are willing to work hard for little money (or even just experience). In his closing remarks, Bailón urged the membership not to confuse technology with journalism. He said that the technological devices are tools, but that those tools are useless without the skills that make one a journalist.

Texas State University won several Mark of Excellence Awards, congratulations to the following:

Spencer Milsap, Stacie Andrews, Monty Marion and Austin Byrd of The University Star – 2nd place for Breaking News Photography

Pat Stark of The University Star – 2nd place for Editorial Cartooning

The University Star Editorial Board – 2nd place for Editorial Writing

Jenny Polson of The University Star – 3rd place for General News Photography

Stacie Andrews of The University Star – 2nd place for Photo Illustration

Andrew Russell of KTSW 89.9FM – 2nd place for Radio Feature

Adam Swank of KTSW 89.9FM – 2nd place for Radio Feature

Grant Martin of Bobcat Update – 2nd place for Television General News Reporting

After lunch, it was back to the panels. Given my background in computer science, and my work with The University Star Web site, two panels jumped off the page and demanded my attendance. The first was Multimedia: A New Way to Tell the Story by Jen Friedberg of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The second was Express Yourself: Blogging and Web Site Creation Demystified with Jake Batsell (Southern Methodist University), Mike Orren (Pegasus News) and Richie Escovedo (Dallas/Fort Worth PR Profesional).

Friedberg echoed Limor’s earlier comments that everyone needs to learn to shoot, and edit, their own video. She also said that in the current climate all bets are off with regards to what you may be required to do in the newsroom. Everyone must learn to do everything now, and nobody is immune when it comes to layoffs. It is up to the individual to make sure their toolbox is as full as possible, and that they understand how to use those tools. Learn video. Learn Adobe® Flash®. Understanding these tools will help keep you marketable, and improve the content of your online edition (for newpapers, and other media).

One very interesting area addressed in Friedberg’s panel was the use of audio slideshows instead of video for certain things. Where it may take several hours to edit video and make it available for the Web, an audio slideshow can generally be created and posted in a matter of minutes. When there is a need for immediacy an audio slideshow is probably the way to go. For longer features you may be best served with video. An advantage the Web has over traditional broadcast is that time constraints are gone. There are no commerical spots to edit around, there is no requirement that a story end by a certain time. The trick, according to Friedberg, is keeping the attention of the viewer and using your multimedia content wisely.

Another point that was discussed was the use of interviews versus the use of voice-overs in video pieces. In general, viewers percieve stories with voice-overs as though the conclusion was known before the story was shot. To some, it may seem as though the story was written and the video produced to say what was already known. On the other hand, if the story is told directly from the source there is a more direct personal attachment to the information by the viewer.

Probably the most important pieces of these two was the distinction made between professional and amatuer blogs, and the need to generate traffic. Friedberg touched on the need to distinguish between the two in her panel, and Batsell, Orren and Escovedo did the same in theirs. While the amatuer side posts any information they come by, the professional must maintain reliable sources, verify information, and consider ethics at all times. Batsell, Orren, and Escovedo described this difference as one between “beat blogs” and “soapbox blogs” and went on to explain how beat blogging can help improve your contacts drastically and in turn improve your news stories.

Where Web traffic is concerned, Friedberg made the suggestion to send at least three links out to people or organizations with vested interests in any story you run. For example if you run a story about a DWI incident, post the link on Twitter, email a link to the local Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter, and post a link at Digg. Batsell, Orren, and Escovedo focused on the more technical driving force behind increased traffic known as Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. Headlines show up as major fields in searches, and should be written with that in mind. What would you search for to find your story? Use that as your headline. Another trick is to include images with all of your stories. When you search a news story on Google relevant matches are grouped together, and Google attempts to find a photo to run as an icon for that search group. If you have the only photo that matches, Google will run that photo as their icon and you will benefit .

When it was all said and done, I left the conference with new contacts in the industry and a clear picture of the challenges every mass communications student must prepare to overcome. Over the next month, I will work on putting together some of the information from the conference and making it available to our members in one form or another. Anyone able to attend these conferences definitely should do so. Start saving now for the national conference if you are interested in going.

With Spring Break coming up, we would like to echo the numerous safety reminders you have already heard. Everyone needs to come back from the break, and be ready to keep moving forward with the organization! Have fun, but do so safely.
